Most people operate and feel energized when they are in clean well-organized environments. A clean environment gives you the feeling that you in control of what is happening in and around you. Unfortunately, decluttering things in your life is not as easy as it seems. Here are 12 golden rules of decluttering your life:

Get rid of duplicates

Why do you have duplicates when you can have originals? Original items are durable and offer great service. As much as duplicates are affordable, they tend to get spoilt fast and they have a very short life span. Therefore, invest in long lasting original and authentic items and get rid of all duplicate items.

Get rid of things you have not used in a year

Do you have things that you no longer use but still feel attached to them? well, they are just clutter that you need to get rid of. If they are still in good working condition, you can either give them out to someone who will use them or simply keep them away in the basement.

Digitize nostalgic items

If you have items that you hold dear and they remind you of great memories, you can digitize them by taking digital photos of them and storing them in files instead of keeping them lying around in your home.

Do not keep items out of guilt

This is a reason why there is always clutter lying around our homes. We tend to keep things we do not need simply because we will feel guilty once we get rid of them. If you no longer need an item simply get rid of it.

Put things back where they belong

The best rule of ensuring that your home stays organized and clutter-free is to always put back things where they belong. After using an item ensure that you place it back where you got it from.

Find a home for your items

If you cannot get rid of certain items like memorabilia, you can find a new home for them. Their new home should be somewhere you will not see them on a daily basis. You can use the artic or the basement for this purpose.

Sell, give away, upcycle, donate or throw away items you no longer need

If some of your personal belongings or items are working properly or are in good shape, you can sell them and make some money, donate to the less fortunate, and if they are no longer valuable, you can simply throw them away.

Do not keep items you wouldn’t buy now

You might have bought some items because you need them at that moment. Why should you buy something that you do not need? Only purchase items that you need not what you want.

Opt for covered furniture

Covered furniture like a cupboard, a TV stand with drawers and lockers can help in storing certain items that you do not use every day. Therefore, do not go for open furniture if you want to keep your home organized and declutter things.

Do not forget storage under your bed

There is adequate storage space under the bed that you can use to store some of the things you do not use on a regular basis. You should however avoid storing electronics under the bed.

Think tall with storage

If you want to install a storage shelves or any other storage equipment, go for tall equipment. This will allow you to store other items on top shelves and leave room at the bottom for storage of other things that you might need regularly.

Evaluate your spending habits

If you are a spendthrift and spend your money on things that you do not need, it is time you evaluated your spending habits. When you buy things that you do not need, they will end up becoming clutter.

Clutter can prevent you from enjoying your life and can make your home look disorganized. Get rid of all the clutter today and make your life better.
